Abandoned town of Zahrádka

We are a voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit association of citizens who share an interest in preserving the cultural and historical monuments of the town of Zahrádka near Ledče nad Sázavou, which was displaced and demolished in connection with filling the Švihov dam on the Želivka river. The association has existed since 2001. Our goal is to protect and revive the monuments of the town of Zahrádka, especially the church of St. Welcomes with historically valuable murals, preserving and presenting objects, memories, photographs and documents reminiscent of the town of Zahrádka and life in it, in order to preserve awareness of its existence, meaning and people, who lived in it.

Zahrádka is an abandoned small town, mostly flooded by the Švihov water dam. Its inhabitants were moved out in the 1970s . The main tangible relic is the Church of St. Vitus from the early 14th century, which was declared Cultural Heritage in 1958. Displaced inhabitants and their descendants launched an initiative for the preservation of the church in 2000 and they found "The Association of Friends of Zahrádka", which collects the funds for the restoration of the church (public collections) and carries out public events (annual feasts, exhibitions and concerts).
