Bečov Botanical Garden

The Bečov Botanical Garden was established in late 1920s by Count Beaufort-Spontin, owner of the local manor. It was intended as a open-access collectors garden with flora from all around the world. By the end of WWII, the garden boasted over 1000 species and a "model" of Alpine meadow. After 1945, the garden became the site of a local industrial company, it was deserted and no longer cultivated. In 2005, a group of local activists cooperating within the Local Group of Czech Union of Nature Protection (ZO ČSOP Berkut) came up with the idea of revitalizing the garden. They got permission from the industrial company and muncipality and they involved other interested individuals, local groups, regional governmet and central institutions to get their support. Today, Bečov Botanical Garden preserves historical botanical species and serves as a local centre of leisure (pond with beach, ferrata-rock, playgrounds, small restaurant) as well as community culture center (art exhibitions, lectures, concerts).
