Ledec Castle

Ledeč Castle Company Ltd.

The gothic castle of Ledeč was one of the biggest and oldest in Bohemia. Since the 18th century, it fell into a state of decay further aggravated by a fire in the 19th century. After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, the castle became state property, and was managed by the State Forest Company (which turned the castle into flats and office space) and by the Ledeč muncipality (Muncipal museum from 1938). In 1950 it became the property of the State Forest Company, and was granted Cultural Heritage status in 1958. After 1990 it was privatised (several private holders), but the need for vast restoration was imminent. Thus in 1999 the Ledeč muncipality bought 75% of the castle and along with the 25%-holder, the local industrial company Kovofiniš, they established the "Ledeč Castle Company Ltd." From then on the castle is being restored (roofs, tower, courtyards, bridge) and interiors are being opened and accessible (Muncipal museum, exhibition of historical clocks and teddy-bears, Museum of Jaroslav Foglar, lookout tower). Regular public events are being held there (markets, concerts). The castle is frequently rented out for the shooting of historical movies and fairy-tales. An example of well-functioning cooperation between the muncipality and a private interpreneur for the purpose of heritage revitalization.
